چکیده

B ecoming independent of crude oil imports, mainly from the Middle East, is an urgent concern for many countries all over the world. In order to secure a sustainable energy supply, especially in the transportation sector, governments need to apply policies that promote the use of renewable energy technologies. The dependence on crude oil imports decreases as the production of total energy from renewable sources (renewabl e liquid fuels) increases. There are two major factors that will influence the amount offinal energy production from renewable sources.. First, sufficient quantities ofbiomass need to be acquired for conversion into liquid fuels. If a cou ntry cannot provide enough biomass, it has to compensate by importing it, which does not lead to energy independence. Biomass is a limited resource. Even though countries like the United States and Canada encompass large areas of rural land, agriculture and .forestry have distinct impacts for the economy as well as for the environment. The use of biomass for conversion to energy competes with other purposes such as food supply and forestry products. Land availability and crop yie1ds are key criteria in determining the quantities of biomass that can be obtained for energy use with in a country. What is more, the production of biomass for energy use must be sustainable, which requires a thorough understanding of the environmental impacts and the likely demand scenarios for renewable fuels. The amount of final energy obtained from domestic renewable energy also depends on the applied conversion technologies. The efficiency of processing biomass into liquid fuels affects the energy input-output ratio. The less enerb'Y needed to run the processes, the more that is available to enter

Renewable Liquid Fuels: Current Situation and Prospects

Ethanol produced from grain and biodiesel produced from vegetable oils and animal fats are the major renewable liquid fuels being produced in the United States. Cellulosic ethanol and Fischer-Tropsch diesel are also renewable liquid fuels of considerable interest, but additional development is needed before they become significant parts of the renewable liquid fuels market. Thus, the discussion...

REFUSA: IS-Enabled Political Decision Support with Scenario Analyses for the Substitution of Fossil Fuels

Fossil fuels in the transport and mobility sector can be replaced with several renewable fuels, such as renewable electricity, hydrogen and biomass-to-liquid. When these alternative fuels are used, aspects such as safeguarding supply, economic efficiency, and environmental protection must be taken into account to ensure sustainable change and to create a sustainable society. We introduce a scen...

The Role of Synthetic Fuels for a Carbon Neutral Economy

Fossil fuels depletion and increasing environmental impacts arising from their use call for seeking growing supplies from renewable and nuclear primary energy sources. However, it is necessary to simultaneously attend to both the electrical power needs and the specificities of the transport and industrial sector requirements. A major question posed by the shift away from traditional fossil fuel...

Designing the perfect plant feedstock for biofuel production: using the whole buffalo to diversify fuels and products.

Petroleum-derived liquid fuels and commodities play a part in nearly every aspect of modern daily life. However, dependence on this one natural resource to maintain modern amenities has caused negative environmental and geopolitical ramifications. In an effort to replace petroleum, technologies to synthesize liquid fuels and other commodities from renewable biomass are being developed. Current ...

Differentiation Between Fossil and Biofuels by Liquid Scintillation Beta Spectrometry - Direct Method

Liquid scintillation spectrometry of 14C in gasoline/ethanol and diesel oil was carried out using QUANTULUS® and straight mixtures of fuel and an organic scintillation cocktail. A linear correlation was found between the concentration of carbon that originates from the bioethanol (biocarbon) and the fuel mixture's 14C activity in the range 0 – 100 % (m/m) bioethanol content. Because of the good...
